ABSTRACT
This article tries to shed light on a part of Sayyid Abdul
A‘la. al-Sabzwari’s method in his
tafsir Mawahib al-Rahman, focusing in particular on his approach of
interpreting the Qur’an through the Qur’an itself. This method seems to give
the Qur’anic text a sense of internal connection—both in meaning and in
structure. From following his style, it becomes clear that al-Sabzwari often
referred to other verses to help explain the one at hand, while also paying
attention to the overall context, and sometimes drawing links between topics
that might appear distant on the surface.
One noticeable feature in his method is that he doesn’t lean
entirely toward one side—he isn’t strictly rational, nor fully reliant on
transmitted sources. Instead, there’s a kind of balance between the two, as if
he’s quietly trying to keep both aspects in harmony, without overburdening the
text or forcing interpretations. The goal of this paper wasn’t to cover
everything in the tafsir, but rather to pause at some theoretical points, along
with a few examples that show how this method plays out in practice.
To broaden the perspective a bit, the article also points out
some areas of comparison with Sayyid al-Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s al-Mīzān, especially
regarding the way both deal with linking verses and exploring internal
connections within the text. Of course, the comparison isn’t complete, but it
offers at least a starting point to get a feel for how close or far apart the
two works really are.
Generally speaking, Mawahib al-Rahman reflects a mature
effort in handling the Qur’anic text from within, offering a tafsir experience
that’s worth paying attention to—especially in a time where there’s a growing
need for approaches that combine personal reflection with solid scholarly
grounding, even if indirectly at times.
