Abstract
This study examines verses on happiness in the Holy Quran and related
Prophetic hadiths to clarify the Islamic conception of happiness, its sources,
and its effects on individual and social life. The research problem arises from
reducing happiness to pleasure or wealth, although Quranic guidance connects it
with faith, righteous action, tranquility, and upright conduct, while locating
its full realization in the Hereafter. The study uses an inductive method to
collect relevant texts, an analytical method to interpret their meanings within
context, and a thematic method to organize them into connected topics. It is
divided into two sections. The first addresses the Quranic concept of happiness
and its contrast with misery; the second studies its foundations and effects in
light of the Prophetic Sunnah. The findings show that the explicit term
“happiness” appears in the Quran in the context of final destiny in Surah Hud,
while its broader meaning is expressed through concepts such as success, a good
life, tranquility, and contentment. Faith does not detach people from work or hardship;
rather, it gives life meaning, patience, and hope. Worldly happiness is
therefore relative and may be reflected in inner security, sound conduct, and
healthy relationships, but it does not mean the absence of pain. Selected
hadiths emphasize contentment, gratitude, patience, mutual support, and good
character as practices that contribute to a balanced life. The study concludes
that happiness in the Islamic perspective is an integrated process combining a
sound relationship with God, beneficial work, respect for rights, and
preparation for the Hereafter. It recommends further comparative thematic
research and the inclusion of spiritual and ethical education in learning
programs, while avoiding simplistic claims that religious commitment eliminates
psychological or social problems.
