Abstract
Distancing
devices are a significant linguistic tool for journalists working in
English-language media; they enable journalists to refer to external sources of
information, moderate the level of certainty about proposed ideas, and control
the degree to which they appear committed to the reported facts. This
investigation is designed to explore the stylistic forms and pragmatic
functions of distancing devices used in English-language journalistic
discourse.
It explores how
linguistic choices create relationships among journalists, sources, and the
reported facts. The study uses linguistic stylistics and Martin and White's
(2005) Appraisal Theory, specifically the Engagement system, and employs a
mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative corpus analysis with
qualitative stylistic-pragmatic interpretation. The proposed dataset includes
60 genuine journalistic articles from BBC News and The Guardian, including 30
straight news reports and 30 opinion/commentary articles published during a
specific 12-month period. The analysis is limited to reporting adverbs, source
attribution expressions, reporting verbs, epistemic modal constructions,
impersonal structures, quotation patterns, and explicit statements regarding
verification limits. Quantitative analysis will assess the frequency and
distribution of these devices, whereas qualitative analysis will analyze their
contextual functions in conveying uncertainty, attributing responsibility,
moderating claims, and establishing journalistic stance. This study assumes
that the distribution and communicative functions of distancing devices will
differ by journalistic genre due to differences in reporting practices and
evaluative positioning. The research intends to develop a systematic
explanation of how distancing is constructed linguistically in English-language
journalism, and therefore make a contribution to the study of attribution,
stance, and interpersonal meaning in media discourse.
Keywords: distancing devices; English journalism; attribution; epistemic stance; Appraisal Theory.
مؤسستي BBC News وThe Guardian،
