Abstract
This study aimed to uncover the nature of linguistic interference in
contemporary Iraqi children's literature and measure its impact on children's
reception by comparing classical Arabic stories with colloquial ones. The study
adopted a mixed methodology combining descriptive analysis of a corpus of ten
stories with a quasi-experimental design using repeated measurements on a
sample of seventy-two fourth and fifth grade primary school students in
Baghdad. Three parallel versions of each Iraqi story were prepared: a
colloquial version, a classical version, and a balanced version with narration
in simplified classical Arabic and dialogue in the standardized Baghdadi
dialect. The descriptive analysis revealed significant structural differences
between the classical and colloquial versions in terms of dialogue ratio,
sentence length, and the explicit inclusion of moral lessons. It also showed
that interference in the colloquial text is structural, not merely verbal, with
Iraqi grammatical structures predominating at a density of 14.3 per 100 words,
along with the infiltration of forms from other Arabic dialects and the absence
of a unified spelling system. The
experimental study demonstrated that the formal language version produced
statistically significant differences in all reception variables, with effect
sizes ranging from moderate to large, remaining significant even after
adjusting for cognitive ability and prior vocabulary. The balanced version
achieved the best overall performance, combining the highest averages for
comprehension, vocabulary, and retelling with the lowest rate of forgetting in
delayed assessment. The colloquial version, on the other hand, recorded the
highest immediate engagement but significantly declined in discrimination
accuracy and retention. Qualitative data revealed higher self-correction among
children in the balanced group and that the majority of teachers supported the
principle of functional separation between formal narrative and colloquial
dialogue. The study concluded that a conscious functional distribution between
the two language levels represents the most effective option for achieving a
balance that preserves the standard of formal Arabic while simultaneously
leveraging the dynamism of colloquial Arabic.
