Abstract
This research
aims to explore the impact of incorporating visual aids, specifically picture
cues, on the development of speaking skills among high school EFL learners in
Iraq. The ability to speak fluently is essential for mastering a second
language, and experts in linguistics have emphasized the significance of
communication skills, particularly in speaking, within language education.
Interestingly, the teaching of speaking skills is not as emphasized when it
comes to English instruction in high school EFL settings in Iraq. For this
study, the researcher selected students who had been following the curriculum
outlined in the "English for Iraq" textbook. The participants'
English proficiency levels were assessed using the Oxford Quick Placement Test.
A total of 50 students were carefully chosen and divided into two equal groups:
a control group and an experimental group. In the experimental group, students
were taught using the same materials as the control group, but with the
addition of visual aids, namely picture cues. Conversely, the control group
received instruction using the same materials but without exposure to picture
cues. To assess the students' speaking performance, two evaluators conducted a
grading session using Hughes's (2003) speaking checklist. The results indicated
that there was a statistically highly significant difference between the
post-test and pre-test scores of the students who received instruction with
picture cues, where the experimental group's mean score rose dramatically from
13.84 to 23.48. Consequently, it is argued that the incorporation of visual
aids, in this case, picture cues, significantly enhanced the speaking abilities
of the experimental group. This suggests that picture cues serve as highly
effective visual scaffolding tools that greatly accelerate oral production.
Ultimately, the experimental group demonstrated a far superior mastery of the
material compared to the control group. Furthermore, these findings suggest
that in the context of Iraq, visual learning styles combined with communicative
methodologies can yield highly positive outcomes in foreign language acquisition,
effectively lowering language anxiety and maximizing the willingness to
communicate.
